When Visiting Hungary

I would highly recommend visiting Hungary in the Spring or Fall when prices can be lower and the weather is nice. I visited Hungary in early September in 2024 and it was still very hot (~30°C) before cooling down throughout the month into Fall temperatures.

Main cities in Hungary to visit are Budapest (of course), Eger, and the Somló wine region. Budapest is centrally located and can be used as a hub to travel around to the rest of the country. Check out my favorite cities in Hungary to visit.

The official language of Hungary is Hungarian (Magyar), although most people in touristy locations speak English. Locals appreciate greetings in Hungarian before addressing them in English. Here are a few phrases you should know:

• Good Morning – Jó reggelt
• Good Day (can be used as general greeting) – Jó napot
• Thank you (formal) – Köszönöm Szépen

The official currency of Hungary is the Hungarian forint (HUF). Credit cards are the most used form of payment, especially Visa and MasterCard. Be sure to check if your card charges foreign transaction fees and always select payment in the local currency (HUF). When going to the markets, I would suggest to bring cash in case their card readers are not working.
